The Summer is almost upon us and I’m excited because it’s always the second half of the year that seems to fly by what with all the events happening at Top in Fiction. And this year we have 3 major ones that will all be published in 2027! Not to mention the 2nd TiF Press anthology coming this Fall!

In other news, I’ve been toiling away on a super secret project. I wish I could say more but until it’s in Beta and some select few people are testing it properly, I can’t even tell you the code name it’s going by! But if it all does according to plan, all will be revealed during the TiF Summit 2027! Till then…

I just want to remind everyone that in about 3 weeks the summit sign-up begins. And shortly after that the first of three writing events! “11” is all I’m willing to tell you about this next event but once all is revealed I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. Especially, those who enjoy writing mystery or historical fiction.

TIF NEWS FOR WRITERS

Writers have asked for the return of the warning email about when the Submissions form is about to close. So, this week, that email will return. It will be scaled back, however. Basically, it won’t have any pressing news contained in it. This email will just be sent 1hr before the form closes as a reminder to those who have not submitted the story they’ve written.

We are less than 4 weeks away from the TiF Summit 2027 sign-up form opening! This form will let me know the general interest of all writers in wanting to go Live on camera and audio to read their work! If you’re interested, make sure to keep an eye on that email that will go out on June 15th.

In the meantime, if you’d like to sign up EARLY the best way to do so is to join the Top in Fiction Discord Server. Everyone there will receive access to the form on June 1st! At the moment I’m only looking to fill 75 spots and it looks like nearly everyone who participated in our first summit will be returning! That means the spots will be limited out the gate. So, I suggest doing all you can to get in early.

For anyone interested in getting their work published, there will be at least 3 opportunities for you to do so this year and the are:

Hi all,

Yes, I am a day late, but with a really good reason that I wish I could share with you. I can’t. But it’s a reason that will forever impact why you chose Top in Fiction and TiF Press in the first place. It’s so amazing and so secret that I’m calling it “PROJECT S” and I want to show you a screenshot even though what I’m working on is very much NOT ready and likely won’t be for another 55 days. I have given myself a 60 day countdown clock to get something pushed out to alpha testers and then an additional 30 days after that to get beta testers in. Showing you this screenshot is whatever comes before alpha! lol

So, if I’m a bit late to getting things out there it’s because I’m just a little bit busy building a thing I probably have no business building considering how much I already have on my plate but I find it quite relaxing to do…

I hope you’re spending these last few weeks of Spring writing and sharing and learning as you go! Cause I know I sure as hell am! And due to it’s day late notification, I will keep the Submissions form open until 10pm on Monday, May 18th (which also happens to be my first day of Jury Duty! YAY!)

In just four weeks from now the sign-up sheet will open for all those who want to be a part of our TiF Summit 2027 happening in January. Now, June might seem a bit early to get the ball rolling on this event but when you consider last year I didn’t start this early and had to wrangle organizing 50 people, trust me, I’m glad to be giving myself the extra time.

One of the things a few participants and viewers have asked me about, when it comes to the next TiF Summit is the question of panels and if we’ll be hosting any? My knee-jerk answer is, no. But I want to try and explain why for anyone who may not have heard my explanation I’ve given in the past:

While I appreciate what panels and workshops can offer to writers starting out I’m also well aware of the audience something like TiF Summit is trying to attract. It’s not like your typical writers convention. Yes, we require writers for it to be successful, but the summit is 100% for readers of fiction. And it’s because of this desire to attract readers that I’m not trying to offer something that most readers may not be as interested in.

Now, that’s not to say that writers aren’t readers (of course we are) or that readers don’t have an innermost desire to write their own fiction some day (of course they do). But I hope taking this firm stance on not including workshops and panels will be what makes this annual event unique and different and attractive to readers everywhere.

Also, a small point I’d like to make to the writers out there who have and will participate, in many ways this event is also for you. A chance for you to share your stories in a way that might inspire others. I’m truly not aware of any other event that is so dedicated and devoted to reading stories from all walks of life and genres on a global scale one after another. Whenever I think about it, I get even more excited at the possibilities.

So, while I champion those who have workshops and panels, attending or running their own, Top in Fiction is dedicated to lifting every voice through storytelling!

If you are a writer of fiction, here there and everywhere, then I hope you will consider signing up. And if you’re a reader of fiction, I hope you will take some time to show up for what will be at least 3-days of amazing fiction next January 2027.

Why has Top in Fiction consistently been several days to a full week behind its regular schedule? I know many of you have noticed because many of you have DM’d me about it. And the honest answer? I’m fed up with AI.

It’s become more real and plain to me that the possibility that something Top in Fiction features has a higher probability of having used AI in any number of ways. The thought of this has made me pause and reflect and spend much longer time with each and every submission. Too much time. I can’t catch AI use. Well, I can catch image AI use. But if it’s been used in any way to tell a fiction story, sure there are key elements to assist in uncovering the truth but I don’t want to have to do that!

I miss the days when I could confidently just pick a story that I liked or that maybe wasn’t my cup of tea but that I hoped the community of readers as a whole would appreciate more than I. And to think that time wasn’t too far away. Nowadays AI simply cannot be avoided, no matter how hard I may try to do so. It’s forced upon me in my 9 to 5 paying job and now I’m forced to confront it here, in a place I consider very much my passion playground.

All I can do is apologize to you, the readers and writers, who’ve been patiently waiting for those Monday emails or this Monthly Recap email, only to be left wondering if Top in Fiction is perhaps no more.

Top in Fiction is still very much here. It’s just taking me a while to reconcile that I can’t police the work. I just have to continue to do what Top in Fiction was created for in the first place and have blind faith that those who contribute here are doing so AI free.

Hi all,

Tiny tweaks everywhere. It’s been a busy couple weeks what with the release of Eye See You and with updating the TiF Press website as well as some Top in Fiction language as well. Phases are always happening in the background and it’s just a matter of keeping up!

One thing I know I need help with because I just truly suck at it, is marketing. And what I mean by marketing is creating the social media images that are required when promoting work. I’ve seen so many of you out there creating some amazing social images and I’m kicking myself that I just can’t seem to figure it out! Maybe I’m trying too hard…

Whatever it is, I’m calling on the community to help me out here! I’d love to complete a Press Kit template that will essentially be used for all publications, present and future, when it comes to spreading the word far and wide. If you are skilled in creating the proper social media images across all platforms (X, Instagram, etc. Sorry, I fear I’ve gotten so old I don’t even know what is being used anymore…) then please DM me and let’s chat! I can provide a hi-res of the cover that can be used.

I am looking for ideas that can be adaptable to any future books so not too wild and crazy with the design.

TiF SUMMIT 2027 UPDATE

Otherwise, In about 5 weeks the sign-ups will begin for our second TiF Summit happening January 2027 and I will tell you that space will be limited already! Everyone who participated last year has an open invitation first to say if they want to join again. And, on the heels of the release of Eye See You | A Horror Anthology comes a much needed update to the TiF Press website! Did you even know we have a website? You probably didn’t. Well, I encourage you to check it out. There are some amazing things there and just on the Home page which now shows the next major event to look forward to as well as an easy way to purchase the ebook for our first book!

I am in the middle of making some much needed updates and things to this site to make it even easier to navigate. But, there are other places/pages of note on TiF Press:

After sitting alone in a Zoom chat for 40min last week Monday, April 13th, I realize that perhaps Meet-ups may just be a thing of the past…and that’s okay. “11” (September) - I wish I could share more about this special event but it’s much too soon. More information will be shared in August.

Pentober 2026 (October 1st - October 31st) - It’s that time of year again to grab your pens/pencils and paper and step away from technology to write a short story! The word prompts will be shared on September 1st.

A Deadly Game | A Horror Anthology (September 28th - October 28th) - The third anthology that will be published by TiF Press in 2027 and our second collaboration with who will be sponsoring this event. The winning story will receive a free entry in their 8th Season Prose category. More information to come this Summer.

A Secret Santa Plot-Swap Sign-Up (November) - This was a run-away hit from last year that I didn’t think would go off so well but we’re back! Are you up for the challenge? We might keep the same theme as it’s so versatile of “What’s inside the box?” I’ll make my final decision by October. But the rules remain the same: You’ll write a brief synopsis for a short story. I’ll take yours and, using a randomizer (ie a rather complicated formula I’ve devised just for this), will swap it with another. You’ll then have a little over one month to write a short story based on someone else’s synopsis! Last year we had 24 brave souls take up the challenge. Will you join us? More information to come in October.

TiF Summit 2027 (Thursday, January 14th - Monday, January 18th) - The dates are tentative at the moment. Day 1 will be the TiF Annual Recap where we look back at how we did in 2026. Days 2 through 4 will be the Voices event where we will be adding hours to accommodate participants and viewers in other parts of the world so everyone can read and listen to stories when it suits them best. Day 5, the final day, will be the TiF State of the Union where we look forward to the Top in Fiction and TiF Press plans for 2027.

TIF NEWS FOR WRITERS

Hi all,

This Monday I’ll be hosting the very first Top in Fiction Meet-Up! Modeled after Fictionistas Meet-Ups that came long before TiF, the idea is for members of the fiction community to get together (via Zoom) and chat about fiction stuffs.

The theme for this month: New Features on Substack & Fiction Writers

This month Substack have boasted that there will be a bunch of new features and just 10 days in we’ve already gotten quite a few that should be helpful to fiction writers. Have you tried them out yet? Do you know what they are? Let’s get together and discuss all the new (and old) features that have brought so many fiction writers here!

The meet-up can be no longer than 40min due to the free Zoom model that I will be using. I will be sending an email on Monday morning that will include relevant invite links.

This is our first time doing something like this so please excuse the many emails and disjointed-ness of it as we figure out the best way to go about doing this thing at least monthly.
