TIF NEWS FOR WRITERS

THE TiF LIBRARY is finally open! I realize saying this might mean very little since you probably didn’t know I was working on a dedicated website in this way. But for a while I’ve hated using Google Forms (as I know many out there who write fiction also hated and is one of the main reasons why submissions have decreased) and I’ve despised relying on the messy looking Notion. Now, I could’ve spent time in Notion and tried to make it look pretty, but I only had the tools available to me and I never felt like it was the right fit for our needs.

So, I rolled up my sleeves and built something from the ground up and is automated and fulfills the need of the weekly (and monthly) issues and submissions for readers to search through and find thousands of stories to choose from. And also the need for a proper form, that isn’t Google, for writers to submit their fictions on a regular basis.

The NEW TiF Library

However, like the Google Form, the questions remain the same as does the time you have to submit your story (every Friday at 7am EST to Sunday at 10pm EST) and the 7-days that the “Submit Your Story” page is capturing. If all works according to plan, the dates and access to the form will update automatically. Not only that, you won’t be able to make any date mistakes as have happened in the past.

I still have complete control over what stories get Featured and the weekly issues as well as monthly recap issues will continue to be sent as emails to our 2k+ subscriber base. I realize the emails are the most important part of the Top in Fiction community but so is the writer experience.

With that said, The TiF Library only serves a purpose if visitors use it. So, if you wouldn’t mind sharing its existence with your subscribers as often as you can? Whether that be directly in your emails or on Substack Notes or even out “in the wild” like on Blue Sky or Threads or wherever else you frequent. Let the people out there know that we’ve got an abundant library of up-and-coming (or already arrived?) fiction writers for them to choose from and we will gladly take up the challenge to fill their extra time with amazing storytelling.

Below you’ll find “The NEW Submission Form” button that will take you directly to the new form. As I said before, the questions are the same as you’ve always had to answer. Just not a Google Form anymore. This form will automatically update with the dates for when your story should have been written. If you see a RED dot beside Submit a Story that means the form is CLOSED. When the dot is GREEN then you can submit a story. Once you do so, if you give the system a minute (or two) to update, you should see your submission appear on the Submissions page as it is set to update in real time.

Lastly, I still have complete control over everything, even the automated parts. If a story needs to be taken down then I will take it down. And wherever/whenever possible I will make necessary updates to submissions as well, if only to make the user experience as simple as possible.

We’re excited to officially open the first round of invitations for the 2nd Annual TiF Summit 2027!

The TiF Summit is a 3-day celebration of a time-honored tradition; reading fiction aloud, utilizing Substack Live in January 2027. Participating writers will host their own 30-minute Substack Live session where they’ll read a short story of their choice to audiences across the Subtack community.

Our very first TiF Summit brought together 50 incredible voices (watch them all here), and this year we’re hoping to grow even bigger with a goal of at least 75 participating writers!

At this stage, we’re simply gathering interest and basic information from writers who may want to participate. Later this year (around September 2026), we’ll follow up with all interested participants via email, so make sure the email you provide is one you check often, to:

• Confirm the story you plan to read (word count specifically)

• Provide access to the Summit Scheduler that will allow you to select your preferred 30-minute time slot

Some things to keep in mind when deciding if you are able to participate:

• Event dates: Friday, January 15 - Sunday, January 17

• Must have a smart phone with the Substack app installed and the ability to go Live. If you’ve already used Substack Live before, that is preferred. A tutorial on how to set this up will be provided.

• The story you select to read should be no longer than 3k words. This allows time to read it fully and perhaps field questions from the audience, should there be any, in the chat. We will allow all fiction though we will ask if there should be any trigger warning for your story and we ask that AI not have been used on the story you select.

• We will have more time slot hours available to accommodate readers and viewers from around the world.

Whether you’re an established fiction writer or just beginning to build your audience, we’d love to have you join us for this community-wide storytelling event.

Hey ya’ll, I realize a shocking drop in submissions in 2026. Is it a trend that in the Spring/Summer time less writing happens? Is Top in Fiction no longer need to help highlight stories from the furthest corners of the Substack-verse? Whatever the reason, I’m sure there are still new writers and legacy writers that are writing on the daily! Writers have asked for the return of the warning email about when the Submissions form is about to close. So, this week, that email will return. It will be scaled back, however. Basically, it won’t have any pressing news contained in it. This email will just be sent 1hr before the form closes as a reminder to those who have not submitted the story they’ve written.

We are less than 4 weeks away from the TiF Summit 2027 sign-up form opening! This form will let me know the general interest of all writers in wanting to go Live on camera and audio to read their work! If you’re interested, make sure to keep an eye on that email that will go out on June 15th.

In the meantime, if you’d like to sign up EARLY the best way to do so is to join the Top in Fiction Discord Server. Everyone there will receive access to the form on June 1st! At the moment I’m only looking to fill 75 spots and it looks like nearly everyone who participated in our first summit will be returning! That means the spots will be limited out the gate. So, I suggest doing all you can to get in early.

Hi all,

Yes, I am a day late, but with a really good reason that I wish I could share with you. I can’t. But it’s a reason that will forever impact why you chose Top in Fiction and TiF Press in the first place. It’s so amazing and so secret that I’m calling it “PROJECT S” and I want to show you a screenshot even though what I’m working on is very much NOT ready and likely won’t be for another 55 days. I have given myself a 60 day countdown clock to get something pushed out to alpha testers and then an additional 30 days after that to get beta testers in. Showing you this screenshot is whatever comes before alpha! lol

So, if I’m a bit late to getting things out there it’s because I’m just a little bit busy building a thing I probably have no business building considering how much I already have on my plate but I find it quite relaxing to do…

I hope you’re spending these last few weeks of Spring writing and sharing and learning as you go! Cause I know I sure as hell am! And due to it’s day late notification, I will keep the Submissions form open until 10pm on Monday, May 18th (which also happens to be my first day of Jury Duty! YAY!)

Hi all,

Tiny tweaks everywhere. It’s been a busy couple weeks what with the release of Eye See You and with updating the TiF Press website as well as some Top in Fiction language as well. Phases are always happening in the background and it’s just a matter of keeping up!

One thing I know I need help with because I just truly suck at it, is marketing. And what I mean by marketing is creating the social media images that are required when promoting work. I’ve seen so many of you out there creating some amazing social images and I’m kicking myself that I just can’t seem to figure it out! Maybe I’m trying too hard…

Whatever it is, I’m calling on the community to help me out here! I’d love to complete a Press Kit template that will essentially be used for all publications, present and future, when it comes to spreading the word far and wide. TiF SUMMIT 2027 UPDATE

Otherwise, In about 5 weeks the sign-ups will begin for our second TiF Summit happening January 2027 and I will tell you that space will be limited already! Everyone who participated last year has an open invitation first to say if they want to join again. I’m looking to fill at least 75 spots so make sure you keep an eye on your email for when the sign-up opens for everyone on June 15th. That email is already scheduled to ensure even I don’t forget to send it!

TiF PRESS PUBLICATIONS IN 2027

• A Deadly Game Event - Our Halloween themed event this year will be a bit different. We’re going to let the readers decide on the best story. All who participate will have an opportunity to receive an invitation for the 2027 anthology. [Opens 9/28. Closes 10/28.]

• “11” - A special event that I can’t tell you much about until late Summer.

• Secret Santa Plot Swap 2.0 - We’re back and as a surprise to many, all who take up the challenge and participate will be invited to be in the ebook only 2027 Volume II release. [Sign up begins early November]

Some quick announcements! First, we officially released our first published book under the TiF Press publishing brand! It’s been a long time coming and I couldn’t be more happy! It includes 18 amazingly spooky and short stories for you to read that you can purchase now on Amazon as a Print book or, even better, as an ebook over on the TiF Press Shop! You may also find a Coming Soon book listed there as well :wink wink:…

And, on the heels of the release of Eye See You | A Horror Anthology comes a much needed update to the TiF Press website! Did you even know we have a website? You probably didn’t. Well, I encourage you to check it out. There are some amazing things there and just on the Home page which now shows the next major event to look forward to as well as an easy way to purchase the ebook for our first book!

I am in the middle of making some much needed updates and things to this site to make it even easier to navigate. But, there are other places/pages of note on TiF Press:

• Events - Everything we ever intend on doing at Top in Fiction and TiF Press can be found here with an easy way to add it to your calendar as a reminder.

• TiF Summit 2026 - Check out all the VOD’s (Video On Demand) for our very successful 3-day event. They are all found here in one convenient location. And if you want to participate in our 2027 Summit, add the Sign-Up reminder to your calendar!

• Wall of Serials - Looking for a serial to read that is Active right now? Here is a literal wall of them. Just hover over an image and watch it flip to give you some key information as you decide whether to read, subscribe, and share each one! [NOTE: If you’ve submitted your serial for entry in the last month and it’s not up there, look for it to be there by EOD today. • Members - You can sign-up and create your own Profile on TiF Press for free. Doing so will give you access to participate in a part of the site that is hidden and for members only; Forums. Here is where we hope to have fiction discussions, host Pentober 2026 this coming October, and much more! It’s very old school and very niche but it’s a starting point. Also, with your Profile you can share your social media links, what you’re reading, listening to, projects, and much more that will be added in the coming days/weeks. Think of it like your Substack Profile but geared specifically for fiction writers so it includes things Substack never would.
